As you may know, I like to interview people from time to time who are active and knowledgeable in vision care, especially children’s vision.
Well, this time I had the opportunity to be interviewed by Ann at the “little Four Eyes” blog. It is a wonderful blog the I read about young children who have vision problems and wear glasses. It is truly unique on the web.
Interview covered my interest in children’s vision, warning signs parents should know, different types of eye doctors, and visual development.

There are many organizations that volunteer time and money to assist people who have vision problems. One very large and active group is the Lions Club. Over the years, I have volunteered my time with many activities such as vision screening at the Special Olympics.
The Lions Club is expanding their facility in Ybor City greatly. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, “The Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research is building a 12,000-square-foot ocular research center adjacent to its building at 1410 N. 21st St., the former F. Lozano & Sons cigar factory. The center will provide space for scientists from both academic institutions and businesses to study eye tissue soon after it is harvested from donors.”

People often think about eye injuries related to sports and the 4th of July. And that is a good thought. But also remember that many eye injuries occur around the home.
“Almost 40 percent of eye injuries happen to people doing yard work or gardening at home, yet few people think about wearing eye protection during these times.”
You can follow these steps from Prevent Blindness America to protect your eyes:
- Wear safety glasses with side protection or goggles when mowing or using a weed eater or power cutting tools, like saws or trimmers.
- Check your yard and remove debris before mowing.
- Turn off power tools when near an unprotected bystander, especially young children. Bystanders and helpers should have eye protection when tools are in use.
- Wear goggles to protect your eyes from fertilizers, pesticides and other yard chemicals, including lime dust.
- Read and follow all product instructions. Obey warnings on yard chemicals and equipment.
- Wear eye protection when using any chemical. After any project, wash hands thoroughly before touching the eyes or face.

OK, so I don’t really get into politics on this blog, but since people are talking about them AND it was in USA Today…. here is the info on Sarah Palin’s glasses.
The Palin frame — minus the lenses — starts at a suggested $375. Depending on the type of lenses, the total package can run to $700.
Matching the look won’t be easy. Although the frames are sold at many optical boutiques, the shape of the strongly rectangular lenses was custom-made for Palin by Home Optics, an upscale retailer in Chugiak, Alaska.
Owner Joy Leedham went to Palin’s home in late December and fitted her in her kitchen — where Palin considered nearly 300 frames. They narrowed it to five frames, and Palin’s family helped pick the winner. The frame is Kawasaki’s 704 series, and the color is 34 gray, Hahn says.
Palin is nearsighted and has slight astigmatism, Leedham says. She does not wear bifocal lenses.
Palin told Leedham that she owned seven pairs of glasses. The frames that Palin picked “help her look fashion-forward,” Leedham says.
