There is more to moving into a home than simply unpacking and setting up furniture and knick knacks. Following are ten important things to inspect right after you move into your new house.
House Number
If your new home number isn’t immediately visible, friends and relatives may have a hard time finding your home. In a worst-case scenario, emergency responders coming to your aid may also have a hard time locating your house if they can’t see the number clearly.
Locks
Replace all the locks once you move into your new home. It’s a common-sense safety move. Adding a camera and/or smart doorbell to your home is also a good idea as it will improve both home security and the house’s overall value.
Entrance Leading to Front Door
Make sure the entrance leading to your front door is free from debris. You should also check for loose pavement stones that could cause an accident.
CO and Smoke Detectors
If you don’t already know where the smoke and CO detectors are, now is the time to find out. You’ll also want to make sure they’re working properly.
Water Heater
Check the water heater temperature to make sure it’s just right for your family. If it’s too hot, someone could get burned.
Exits
It’s wise to make a fire escape plan as soon as you move into your new home. Check the house so you know where all the exits are in case you need to make a hasty getaway.
Child Hazards
Families with young kids will want to check the house for hazards that could cause an accident. These include long blind cords, electric outlets and loose wires.
Slippery Surfaces
Are there slippery surfaces in your home? If the answer is yes, look for ways to remedy the problem. A throw rug can work wonders, as can rubber mats in the shower.
Yard Hazards
Have a close look at your back and front yards. Clean up pet poop, glass, sharp stones or any other objects that could cause an accident or spread disease.
Screens
Screens let cool air in while keeping pests out. Make sure there are no small holes in screen windows or doors to keep your home safe and clean at all times.
