    The BESA Goes to Sandy!

    August 21st, 2010

    Congrats to Sandy!

Every week during out staff meeting we hand out the BESA, which stands for “Bright Eyes Spirit Award.” We have an awesome trophy that we bring to the staff meeting . Then we recognize a staff member who has gone above and beyond in some way. It could be providing fantastic patient care, significantly assisting fellow staff members or . That person then gets to keep the trophy for a week and will be on the lookout for some amazing work so they can pass it on the following week.

This week the BESA goes to Sandy. A patient shared some very high praise of Sandy both prior to and during the patient’s appointment.

Bright Eyes Goes ‘Bowling for Dreams!’

    August 5th, 2010

Did you know that Bright Eyes has a passion for bowling? Well, we don’t. But we do have a passion for community involvement, especially when it means helping out local children.  So we are happy to be sponsoring a “Dream Team” of bowlers to raise money for the The Children’s Dream Fund.

Check out the Dream Team: All Your Pin Are Belong to Us

You can join us as a ‘Pinhead’ guest for $30. For that you get to watch the action, take part in the silent auction and raffle, complimentary beer, wine and pizza buffet, as well as musical entertainment from 93.3FLZ DJ, Kidd Leow. If you’d like to sponsor a team Click here to email Andrea Vest or call 727.896.6390.

More info The Children’s Dream Fund:

The Children’s Dream Fund was founded in 1981 with the single purpose of fulfilling dreams for children ages 3-18 who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. Referrals are received from several hospitals on Florida’s west coast. Dreams vary greatly – from trips to Disney World, meetings with celebrities, computers, play sets, cruises and shopping sprees. Every child deserves hope and a dream! The true impact of a child’s dream cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Our desire is to grant every eligible child’s dream. There are many children in our community with life-threatening illnesses, and the Children’s Dream Fund needs your help to reach them.

    Hope to see you there!

Stay tuned for your chance to win our next big contest! And in the meantime, don’t forget the sunglass sale we have going on: 20% to 40% on all sunglasses!

FREE Sunglasses Contest & Summer Sale

    July 1st, 2010

    Sunglasses

Boy, the Social Media Day Meetup last night at Tampa Bay Brewing Company was great. Tampa really rocked it last night like I knew we would. It was fun to see lots of friends and patients there. We were happy to give away two Bright Eyes gift certificates. I don’t know who the lucky winners were, but if it was you, let me know. We’d like to give you a shout out!

If you’ve been a patient of Bright Eyes for a while, you know that we love to give away stuff! We’ve  given away books,  a pair of Tiffany and Co. sunglasses, Prada frames, Nike frames, multiple Coach frames, and more gift certificates than we can count!

And we are at it again starting today! It is summertime and that means it is time to give away some new sunglasses!

Here is how to win:  Just go to the starfish picture on our Facebook page by clicking here. We have picked a pre-determined “winning point” on the picture. Tag yourself anywhere in the photo. That’s it. It is so easy!

On the morning of July 9th, whoever tagged closest to the winning point will be able to choose, in person, from our entire collection of Linea Roma sunglasses! (That’s the kind that I wear.) :)

But there is one catch: The picture must have 50 tags, or else there will not be a winner. Tag your friends and family or whoever else might want free sunglasses to make sure there are 50 people tagged before July 9th!

But wait, there’s more! Not only are we giving away sunglasses, but during the month of July every pair of shades is on sale. That’s right. Save between 10% and 40% on every line of sunglasses we carry: Linea Roma, Kate Spade, Costa Del Mar, Bulgari, Coach, Tiffany & Co, and more!

So tag the photo and stop by to check out the sale. If you have any questions, let us know. Good luck!

    Social Media Day in Tampa!

    June 27th, 2010

UPDATE: Bright Eyes is happy to be giving away two $100 gift certificates at the Social Media Day Meetup! It is the least we can do to support this great event and Tampa Bay Tech! There are tons of other great door prizes also, including food, concert tickets, and more! So come on down!

If you haven’t heard yet, this Wednesday night will be the biggest social media event in Tamp Bay since Foursquare Day. The event was conceived by Mashable as a means to get together and celebrate Social Media. It is called Social Media Day, and there are over 100 people planning to attend the local event! In fact, Tampa currently has the 14th largest gathering of the 550 in the world according Mashable’s Meetup Everywhere page.

The Social Media Day locally is being organized by Jordan Leonard and Kyle Williams. It is being held at the Tampa Bay Brewing Company at 6pm on Wednesday 6/30. You can find out more details about the event, as well as RSVP and catch up on the pre-event conversation here. When making plans, don’t forget to use the hashtag #TMMUP.

The local success of this event is just more evidence that Tampa Bay has a vibrant and growing tech scene. We at Bright Eyes are so excited about it, we are closing early this Wednesday to take part. So if you see me and the Bright Eyes staff be sure to say hello!

Foursquare Day: The First Global Social Media Holiday

    April 3rd, 2010

Note to regular Bright Eyes News readers: I know that the subject of social media and Foursquare Day is a significant departure from the usual topics of eye care news and vision therapy. However, this last week has been such an interesting experience and started at Bright Eyes and I hope you don’t mind another post….  -Dr. Nate.

I have had the most amazing week! I have been meeting amazing people, working like crazy, and this morning am reading an article in the St. Pete Times about me. It is quite surreal, I must say.

Why all the excitement? Well, it appears that I had an idea that has lead, through a chain of events involving a lot of hard work by Tampa Bay people, to the creation of Foursquare Day: the first global social media holiday.

I won’t use this space to explain the background in detail. You can read the story as it evolved here, here, and here.

But now that Foursquare Day is getting attention beyond the social media crowd (the Twitteratti, as I call them), I am getting a lot of people saying some variation of, “Hey Dr. Nate, Foursquare Day sounds really cool. I just don’t think I understand it.” So the point of this post is to explain my take on this new phenomenon.

Foursquare Day began as a fun way to recognize the company foursquare on April 16 each year.  Foursquare  is a very fun application that has the potential to enrich the life of both users and local businesses like mine. To participate, all you have to do is go to any place on April 16 where people can gather and let the world know you are there via foursquare. It is that simple.

However, as the Foursquare Day project grew, I began to think about what I was experiencing. Although I have blogged here and elsewhere for years, used Twitter and Facebook very successfully to promote Bright Eyes and create actual, real-life relationships with people, I have never experienced the raw power that social media has to literally change the world, until now. And that has become what Foursquare Day means to me.

To the best of my knowledge, and I am certain that someone will correct me if I am wrong, Foursquare Day is the first globally recognized grass-roots celebration of the power of social media as a positive force within the community.

Let’s take a look at some of the pieces of that statement:

“first” – I think. A Google  search showed lots of great Geek Holidays, but none specifically about social media, and just how social media influenced holiday shopping. Again, please tell me if I am wrong.

“globally recognized” – From the Foursquare Day Swarm HQ, from the Hyatt in downtown Tampa, we will be video conferencing with people celebrating social media from every continent, except Antarctica. (If someone can swing that, I’ll buy you lunch!)

“Grass-roots” – It is important to note that foursquare did not start this movement, nor did they buy it. It started in Tampa and has only succeeded through the very hard work of too many people to name here. Like much of the social media activity, this is being done by people purely because it is cool for them.

“power of social media” – The ability to not just chat on Facebook and Twitter (which is important), but to use wikis, Skype and other communication tools is unparalleled to any time in human history. Not only can we do these things, but we can do them ANYWHERE – coffee shops, our bed, a park. (But not while driving, for our own safety).

“Positive affect on the community” – Like any tool, social media can be used for good or evil. But I am convinced that the overwhelming use of social media is for the betterment of individuals and communities. Not only can we develop strong, permanent relationships with people both locally and globally as well as  support local, independent businesses and non-profits, we can use social media to support wonderful causes. One issue that I am passionate about is the development of children’s vision to help them reach their potential. Two social media examples that help people understand what I do is the COVD blog and this grass-roots Facebook page.

So Tampa and everyone else, even if you don’t use foursquare, please come down to the Hyatt to swarm with us for Foursquare Day on April 16 in celebration of social media. Bright Eyes is the primary sponsor, and it will be the biggest party we’ve EVER held!

And, of course, I wouldn’t be a businessman if I didn’t  mention that you can check in at Bright Eyes on April 16 and save 50% (yes, half), on all glasses and sunglasses. Read more here and tell every one you know. You will never see a deal like this again. I am certain of it.  :)

Celebrate Foursquare Day on April 16!

    March 22nd, 2010

    UPDATE!

After some good work by @redheadjessica: #4sqday is official!

    Official Tweet

    Official Foursquare Day Tweet

Foursquare has gotten some good press recently, thanks in part to SXSW. I want to help, by turning April 16 into Foursquare Day!

Background: I’ve been a fan of foursquare since before I could even use it. While it was incubating in New York, I was reading about foursquare on Mashable, but since Tampa wasn’t yet an open city, I couldn’t do much. Immediately after Tampa was unlocked I blogged and tried to get the word out to friends and fellow business owners. Although I used the mobile site, it wasn’t until I could download the Blackberry app, that I really began to see it as a game that also challenges me to try new venues in my neighborhood!

More background: I’ve always been a fan of geeky holidays. My birthday, October 23rd, falls on Mole Day (10^23). And of course March 14, (3.14) is Pi day. And May the 4th (May the force… with a lisp) is a great day for a Star Wars Day party!  So why not Foursquare Day? Let’s get out there and frequent some local venues on Friday, April 16.  Why then? Because it is the 4th month, and the 4-squared day!foursquare_logo-300x300

To participate, all you have to do is check in somewhere on April 16, and use the #4sqday hashtag! Then party down! It is that easy!

But if you want to help us get the word out here are some other ideas:

    For Users:

Share this blog post with everyone!

Tweet about it. Use the one-click tweet if you want to!

Vote the idea up on the official Foursquare Get Satisfaction page.

Join the Foursquare Day facebook page!

Tell your friends and use the #4sqday hashtag when making your plans!

    For businesses:

Make sure your venue is up to date with correct info, tags, categories, etc. For example, here is Bright Eyes venue page.

Offer a special or discount on Foursquare Day! Tell everyone, put it on your webpage, blog about it, tweet about it. Stay tuned for our #4sqday discount!

I don’t think it is an improper use of tips to add a tip for your venue that you are celebrating Foursquare Day with a special of some sort, but others may disagree on that point.

It has been suggested that anyone who gets 4 check-ins on Foursquare Day get a Foursquare Day badge. I am all for this! If anyone knows how to bring this badge closer to reality, let me know!

So what am I missing? What else should we do to get the word out? What are you planning on doing to celebrate Foursquare Day? And don’t forget to friend me!

If you’d like to be a part of the #4sqday planning group let me know!

    The New Tampa YMCA Spin-a-thon

    March 2nd, 2010

    logo_NT

At Bright Eyes, we believe in strong relationships with the community. In addition to providing eye care for those in need, we have been longstanding supporters of  the YMCA.

I routinely work out at the Y and since this year has been quite cold, I’ve especially enjoyed the spin classes, also called studio cycling.  So I was excited to see that there was going to be a spin fundraiser: The Spinathon on Saturday, March 20th at the New Tampa YMCA!

The idea is simple: A person or team of people will do four consecutive hours of spin class. They take donations to raise money for the YMCA Building Strong Kids Campaign. The Building Strong Kids Campaign is a nation-wide campaign to raise money for after-school care, swim lesson, camps, leadership training, and other programs for kids not just in Hillsborough County, but around the country.

Why donations? (Get it? “Y Donations!”, lol ) From the YMCA webpage: “Simply put, your gift changes lives. Every dollar given to the YMCA goes directly to help children and families participate in YMCA memberships and programs, regardless of their financial circumstances. Through YMCA involvement, families become closer, children grow and blossom, seniors discover new energy, and those with disabilities find new abilities and new hope.”

Check out this wonderful video about  Building  Strong Kids, click here.

And if you like to read some wonderful testimonials, click here.

The entire staff of Bright Eyes will be taking turns spinning away for four hours straight. We are planning on getting team shirts and everything. You won’t miss us. It will be a blast!

There are three ways to support us in the Spinathon:

    1) Drop a donation in the Spinathon box at Bright Eyes: check or cash is fine.

    2) Use this handy Chipin widget via Paypal. (It is SO easy!)

    3) You can donate directly to YMCA: Just click here and then tell us how much you donated for our team!

Look forward to photos and results! Let us know if you’d rather your gift be anonymous. Or consider forming a team of you own!!

UPDATE:  To ensure that we reach our goal, we will be donating 5% of all sales on glasses to the Spin-a-thon between now and March 20th. If you’d like to match our donation, then let us know!

    GO TEAM BRIGHT EYES!

    And the Coach winners are……….

    March 1st, 2010

Thank you so much to all those who entered our FREE Coach contest! It was very fun. We had so many great entries via text, tweet, blog, and Facebook.

I know there is much anticipation to find out the winners. And I will reveal them….. soon. But while I’ve got your attention: You can still text “Brighteyes” to 74700 to be put on our texting list for specials and events. And don’t forget to check in on Foursquare and add reviews about us on LocalShops1.com!

    Now, on to the winners:

Our category one (blog comment) winner: Joysunshine.

She really out did herself with creative and honestly desperate pleading for Coach sunglasses. Here is one sample:

(In the tune of “If I Only Had a Brain”)

    I will savor every hour
    While lookin at the flowers
    And not have any strain
And my face would be so dreamy
While the sun’s so hot and steamy
If I only had COACH Frames

I’d be cute, not just a little
    As any individ’le
I hope I’m not too vain

    (Dorothy–a.k.a. Dr. Bonilla-Warford)
In the sun you’d be winkin’
While your shades would hide your blinkin’
If you only had COACH frames.

    (Scarecrow–aka ME)
Oh, I would watch the sky
As the sunset on the shore
I could look at things I never saw before
And then I’d sit and look some more

I would not be missin’ nuffin’
I’d sing till I was huffin’
I’d play out in the rain
I would dance and be merry
    Life would be a ding-a-derry
If I only had COACH frames!!!!

Winner from Category Two (Twitter/Facebook): @KrystalS

Krystal not only had numerous funny Facebook and Twitter pleas for the glasses, she was the only one who actual wrote a blog post about our contest.  Kudos to her for going the extra mile.

Winner from Category Three (Text): Melanie Alvarez

Like most people who entered by text, Melanie also entered via the other ways.  But she was the luckiest texter.

Congrats to all three winners! All you have to do is stop by Bright Eyes and pick out some shades or frames. We’ll take care of the rest. :)

Thanks to all who entered. I hope everyone had a good time. But, hang on, there is more.  We had so many great entries that we decided to give out some honorable mention prizes!!!!

First, we have @IslandGirlCakes! She makes specialty cakes and said that she’d make a special Bright Eyes cake if she won. So we will take her up on her offer and will trade one pair of Coach sunglasses/frames for said cake. It better be amazing!

Second,we have @EllenatVistra who did submit some creative poems and haikus! She wins a $100 gift certificate!

And finally, Amanda, Amy, MicheleDanielle and Shelley all win $50 gift certificates for sheer determination!

This contest was very fun. Maybe we’ll do it again. We’ve already done Tiffany and Coach. Maybe Kate Spade next time?

    Thanks everyone!
