TOP 10 THINGS YOU WILL LOVE ABOUT OUR NEW OFFICE!

As many of you (hopefully) know, we are in the process of moving Bright Eyes across the parking lot. Instead of facing Montague St, we will be facing the much busier Linebaugh Ave.

Why are we moving? It isn’t because we haven’t enjoyed our time at 10108 Montague. We have! The fact is that we have outgrown our current space. We want to provide more and better service and simply won’t be able to do that in our current location – so we are movin’ on over across the parking lot to a larger and nicer location.

What can you look forward to at the new place:

  1. More space! – Over the years we have creatively used every inch of the current space. The Linebaugh location will be 50% bigger and will have two full exam rooms, larger vision therapy room, a pre-testing and contact lens area, and (much the to staff’s delight) an actual breakroom.
  2. More waiting area – Although we try to keep patients from having to wait for long periods of time, there are times when there are more patients and family members waiting than we currently can accommodate. Fortunately, we’ve increased the number of seats at the new Linebaugh location.
  3. Better Reception area – Despite our best efforts, we admit, sometimes there is confusion at the front desk at our old Montague location. The new space will have separate check-in and check-out locations to facilitate the process.
  4. More eyeglass frames! – Fortunately, the new optical is not only gorgeous, but has space for an additional 200 eyeglass and sunglass frames. We have carefully reviewed our selections and have increased the number of premium sunglasses, designer frames, and kids frames.
  5. More vision therapy equipment – For the last several years, there has been some therapeutic equipment that we wanted to purchase, but just didn’t have space. As it is, we have equipment on shelves and stashed away in the exam room. The new, larger vision therapy room has been designed to accommodate the new equipment. This includes an observation window, so that parents and can watch what is going on without being distracting. So great!
  6. Improved patient flow – Because the old office only had one exam room by design, there was a lot “musical chairs”. Believe me, this annoyed me as as much as it annoyed you. The layout of the new office that includes a pre-test area and multiple exam rooms, will allow for less shuffling as well as less waiting.
  7. Fewer outside distractions – As much as we loved our old space, there were a few times when there were disturbances outside of our control. We definitely think that the new space, nestled between Sylvan Learning Center and West Park Dental Associates, will be quieter.
  8. Increased contact lens privacy – Although it was not a problem for most people, learning to insert and remove contacts can be a stressful experience – especially if patients think that other people are watching them. The brand new contact lens area is designed to allow one-on-one interaction between contact lens specialists and patients, away from the optical and waiting area.
  9. Nicer floors – I don’t know if you’ve ever looked at the floors at the Montague office, but they were pretty awful. Painted concrete does not hold up to foot traffic. Well, this time we got lucky! The previous tenants put in gorgeous dark hardwood.  We think you will like the look!
  10. West Park Village – Yes, we are thrilled to stay in the Village. We could have moved the office to several other locations, but we love the neighborhood. We’ve become friends with the residents and business owners. We are excited to see the area continue to grow and change.

We can’t wait to show off the new office! Stay tuned for a grand opening party extravaganza announcement soon! In time, you can see some pictures of the work in progress on the temporary new office foursquare page!

Free tickets to Tampa Improv!

Wow, with all the stress and confusion from moving our office to a BIGGER and BETTER location (here’s the skinny, more on that later!) the Bright Eyes staff and I sure would like to blow off some steam! And there is almost nothing better for a good night out than some laughter at live comedy. It has been one of my favorite night time outings for years – especially when we lived in Chicago.

But you don’t have to Chicago, NYC, or LA to see some wicked funny comedy. Thanks to our friends at Improv, you can get your laugh on right in Tampa, and in honor of National Eye Health Care Month (see related post), they’ve graciously given us FREE tickets to hand out! Free funny? What could be better? :)

So even though we are not seeing a full load of patients during our move across the parking lot, please stop in in the week and check out what dates we have left. First come first serve!  Each coupon is redeemable for a ticket for two people on a specific night fro a specific performer, so check your calendar in advance.

So there ya, go. Have a great time and be sure to say thanks to the fine folks at Improv for donating the tickets!

Yelp is Official in Tampa!

At Bright Eyes we try to stay ahead of the game when it comes to social media. We’ve had the blog for about 4 years now. We have fun with Facebook and Twitter. When foursquare was available in Tampa, I was one of the first local bloggers to write about it. As turned out, that was pretty successful.

Well, I am excited to share the news that Yelp is official in Tampa! If you are not familiar with it, Yelp is a social online business review site. People use the site to help decided where to go and then share opinions about their experiences afterward, good and bad. You can read a more detailed explanation on my Westchase Patch blog here.

I have been using Yelp personally since early 2009 and have found it to be a lot of fun. We’ve also established a Bright Eyes account and have been offering Yelp discounts and check-in rewards check in for a quiet a while. But now that we have an official  Tampa Yelp representative, we have lots of more options includingReviews of the Day, Newsletters, and official events. So get excited! This is yet more validation that we have a thriving tech scene in Tampa. It is something we should be proud of and continue to develop!

If you have any questions about how yelp works either for consumer business, don’t hesitate to let me know.

(PS: I’m still excited about Google Plus! If you haven’t had the opportunity to try it out yet, let me know and I will get you an invite as soon as I can.)

Tampa Bay Band WD-HAN on the Vans Warped Tour 2011

Tampa Bay based band WD-HAN (stands for “We Don’t Have A Name”) is a fun-loving rock group comprised of four members: Spencer Barnes on Vocals, Cal Henry on guitar, Lea Campbell on drums and Chaz Radle on bass. Playing mostly originals they have a sound compared to that of Incubus, Kings of Leon and The Temper Trap.
Contrary to their title they certainly are making a name for themselves. In the past year they’ve shared the stage with bands such as Motion City Soundtrack, Sing It Loud, A Rocket To The Moon, Set It Off and many more. WD-HAN has gone on radio stations all over Florida and been to play at multiple colleges. You may have even seen them on NBC’s “Daytime” (twice)!

Now they have put their name in the bag for a slot on this years Vans Warped Tour. Signing up for Ernie Ball’s Battle of the Bands 15, WD-HAN is currently ranked at number 25 for the St. Petersburg area!

How can you help them? “The top 100 vote getting bands for each venue will be eligible to win a slot to play live on the 2011 Warped Tour. All 100 bands for each venue will be reviewed by a panel of industry professionals comprised of our partners, 2011 Warped Tour Organizers, and Ernie Ball Inc.”

Set yourself up with an account on the Ernie Ball website and vote daily! Here is WD-HAN’s profile: http://www.battleofthebands.com/u/WD-HAN

If you’re interested in checking out their music you can visit any one of the below sites. Feel free to drop a line, it’s always them talking back!

(I voted for WD-HAN! Did you? We love to support local music, art, and community organizations. This guest post submitted by Marjorye Dewsnap, WD-HAN band administrator. If you have a post you’d like to submit for our blog, let us know. – Dr. Nate)

Foursquare Day and the Press Conference with Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn

(click to watch video)

I can certainly say that it is has been a remarkable journey. If you are not familiar, Foursquare Day started a little over a year ago when I was trying to find a way to have a fun event for Bright Eyes using foursquare and, to my surprise, the idea was very popular. In three weeks, it went global. You can read about happened in 2010 here and the recent story in the Tampa Tribune here.

This year, thanks to volunteers in Tampa and around the world, it was an event greater success. Foursquare Day was officially proclaimed by 19 mayors around the world, including Michael Bloomberg of New York City, and Tampa’s newly elected Bob Buckhorn. Over 1000 parties were held all over the world and money was raised for many great causes such as the Humane Society, Red Cross, food banks, and Japanese disaster relief.

April 16th was a busy one for me. After a few hours of sleep in Houston, TX, where I had spoken the day before to eye docs about Facebook, I flew back to Tampa early. I rushed for an interview for Bay News 9, did some blogging for 4sqday.com and then participated in a press conference with Mayor Buckhorn. It was very cool to spend time with the mayor talking about social media in a relaxed setting, outside by the Sail Pavilion. Then Mayor Buckhorn and I spoke at the podium about the importance of social media and business development, before Mayor Buckhorn proclaimed Jason Cyr the “Foursquare Mayor of Tampa.”

Until next year!

Tampa Mayor Buckhorn and others to Celebrate Foursquare Day

Wow, what a crazy few days. I’m in Houston, TX for an optometry meeting and Foursquare Day got a nice write up in The Tampa Tribune, which featured a nice pictures of me. Very cool.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn will sign a proclamation naming the Foursquare Mayor of Tampa in honor of Foursquare Day. The event will take place at the Sail Pavilion on the Riverwalk at Tampa Convention Center on Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2:04 p.m.

Mayor Buckhorn, myself and others will speak at the event, held in celebration of Foursquare Day and to help raise awareness about ways social marketing can be used to increase business. Tools such as Foursquare are not only an easy way to promote a business, but it is free, making it an affordable option to add to a marketing program.

After the real mayor’s event, we’ll be heading over to the Tampa Tap Room for the 4sqday party. Free drinks and give-aways, it will be a lot of fun!

Yesterday Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed April 16th to be Foursquare Day for New York City. As the Huffington Post reports, NYC joins many cities in making Foursquare Day Official. This is all very exciting, the Mashable story even refers to me by name as the originator of Foursquare Day.

And lastly, don’t forget our big Foursquare Day Sale!

Tampa Bay Lightning Goalie Dwayne Roloson Trains His Eyes

Recently the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St.Paul ran a story on Tampa Bay Lightning goalie, Dwayne Roloson. Part of the story explains how he uses sports-vision, to keep him at the top of game at age 41.

Says Dr. Mark Gordon, Roloson’s optometrist:

“We take a look at eye-hand coordination, reaction time, processing speeds, peripheral awareness,” Gordon said. “Do we know where our teammates are? Do we know where the opponents are? Do we know where the puck is? Do we know how fast the puck is moving? Can we make sense of not only where the puck is at this moment but where it’s going to be a half-second from now?”

Sports vision is a type of vision therapy. Sometimes vision therapy is used to help someone develop skills they did not develop on their own. For example, vision therapy could be used to help a patient with autism develop control of their eye movements. Sometimes vision therapy is used to help people cope with visual stress, like the high-school student who gets double vision while studying. In sports vision, the goal is to help people who already have average or better than average visual skills have even better skills so that they perform at their maximum potential.

This exemplifies a great point. Vision therapy isn’t “a procedure.” It is the application of any of a number of procedures and concepts to increase a patient’s visual skill. And this in turn can help them reach their goals, whether they are passing the FCAT or blocking the next hockey goal.

If you have questions about vision therapy, please do not hesitate to come in or contact us!
